After two weeks of cloudy skies and rain a beautiful morning dawned, maybe someone up there new it was our big day.
It was to be the first meeting with West Ham Supporters Team a very capable side who word had it contained at least one Ryman Premier League player and a few other very good individuals.
The opening exchanges saw a lot of West Ham pressure on the Hampton goal but stout defending and some good goalkeeping by Alex who was standing in for Nashy, saw us repel this threat. The ball however seemed to get stuck in our midfield and our forwards Curt and Jamie N were not getting as much of the ball as they would have liked. A few times attacks were made on the West Ham goal but didn't really cause them too many problems.
Colin battled hard along with Paul D and Michael P who just grows in stature each week and yet again is in with a shout for player of the match.
West Ham played some good passing football and on their forward runs gave themselves options with players overlapping to the left and right which meant we had to be at the top of our game to keep them under control. One such attack from their left winger saw Jamie H go to clear the ball but connect, extremely painfully, with the bottom of the West Ham mans studded boot, Michael P competently covered while the injury was tried to be run off, but to no avail, as Jamie H would not appear for the second half.
As the half time whistle blew we were pleased to go in with the scores level.
Half Time: Beavers FC 0 West Ham 0
The changes at half time saw Jamie M who had a good first half outfield step between the posts to allow Alex, our first half goalkeeper, to play up front. Danny replaced Curt and slotted into midfield so that his much improved heading of the ball could be utilized and Adam went in at right back. Almost immediately it became apparent that Alex was a naturally gifted player as he fought well winning the ball on several occasions when a West Ham man should have had the upper hand. This good play was rewarded when a run down the middle by Alex saw him chip the 'keeper and after a faint touch by the West Ham glove the ball bounced satisfyingly into the net.
The game was a tense affair by now with openings by both sides becoming less and less. The ex Beavers FC player Alfie, who had joined West Ham for an undisclosed fee, evened up the scores with a fine solo run and a well stuck shot which left Jamie M with little chance and capped a good performance from him. The last 20mins saw the appearance of John who gave a really good account of himself.
The rest of the game was played out to an even conclusion in front of our biggest crowd of the season. Referee Paul B was indicated to by linesmen Dave B and Gibbo, to all of whom we owe our thanks, that time was up and the final whistle blew with a fair result and honours even. This starts an unbeaten run for us at the Beveree Stadium.
