06/01/07 - Hendon 1 Beavers FC 2

Well more history was made at today's game vs Hendon with Beavers FC breaking their duck and recording their first win. The weather was more suitable for ducks than for playing football but it was credit to both teams that they knuckled down to battle in the wet, muddy conditions.
Beavers started the 1st half playing up the slope which on occassion led to Hendon attempting long balls over the top for their forwards to run on to. However they found Elliott in his usual excellent form and Michael having an inspired game in central defence. With good support from full-backs Adam and Jamie we looked good at the back. The conditions meant at times it was more difficult playing good football so some of our good build up play came to nothing when the final ball skidded off the turf or got stuck in the mud.
As has happened before Beavers conceded first after about 20 mins. The Hendon forward broke a tackle in the box and finished well with a shot into the far corner.
We needed to be strong till half time as conditions would be to our advantage in the 2nd half. Our efforts were rewarded with an equaliser before half-time. Showing strength and skill through midfield Jamie and Stef exchanged passes before the ball broke to Chris running in on goal. As the keeper came out to close the angle and a defender at his back Chris showed composure in laying the ball across to Danny, who had strode forward in support, and was able to tuck the ball away.

The 2nd half had Beavers playing with the slope in our favour, but with the ball sticking in the middle of the field it became difficult at times. We looked at times the fitter side - but Hendon had more subs to rotate.
15mins in an inspired double substitution saw Keith and Reesy on for Danny and Stef - and the fresh legs had nothing at all to do with the goal we scored a minute later - but it must have put Hendon off !
As we attacked down the left flank Andrew latched onto a loose ball that perhaps the keeper should have come out for. However as the keeper remained rooted to the spot Andrew smacked the ball past him for the Beavers to take the lead.
The remainder of the game was pretty much end to end as Hendon searched for an equaliser whilst we tried to get a third and kill Hendon off.
Both had chances but we remained solid defensively - exemplified by a goal saving sliding tackle by Keith as the Hendon striker was about to shoot. Matt in goal was superb - especially with his Pepe Reina impression in nearly taking the ball over the line backwards in making a save but having the presence of mind to throw it down for the defenders to clear.
Going forward Chris, Lee and Curt were stretching the Hendon defence but couldn't get the finish we desired.
The last action was Matt making an excellent stop at his near post which secured the win.
